These trips will be based out of Portland, Maine. A city perfectly situated as a jumping off point to explore the beautiful Maine Coast. Itineraries will vary depending on the weather forecast but we will shoot for at least one overnight sail to bring us to the Penobscot Bay region of the Midcoast. There are seemingly hundreds of protected anchorages to choose from and we will plan to spend each night in a new cove. As the week winds on we will make sure we are positioned well for the return to Portland, which will invariably be a beat into the prevailing southwesterlies.

These are great trips to gain more experience with a mix of coastal and offshore sailing. Each day we will practice route planning, coastal navigation and sail handling, while each evening we will get to fine tune our anchoring strategy. Maine is notoriously a challenging coastline to sail with the large tidal ranges, rocky shores and high percentage of fog, but the rewards are picturesque harbors and unspoiled nature.

 

We may come across seals, porpoises, whales and even puffins. Plus after learning how to sail in these conditions you are ready to cruise anywhere!
