Lunenburg is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. After a day or two exploring the quaint town and preparing Arbella, we will leave on the 300 nm passage across the Gulf of Maine. This area is known for extremely strong currents, fog and plenty of fishing traffic. Cape Sable, the southwestern point of Nova Scotia, has currents that are known to run at over 4 knots! After navigating across the Gulf we will aim for a landfall in Portland. Depending on timing and wind direction we may end up closing the Maine coast a little further Downeast and then hop down the coast to the final destination.
This will be a great trip for individuals looking to gain experience with more challenging navigation. It will be a true bluewater passage but on a more approachable timeline as we will be at sea for 2 to 3 days. During that time a sharp lookout will be required for the seemingly endless array of lobster and crab traps, and you will develop an ear for how far away a lobster boat is in the fog. Radar and AIS will be critical tools, and you will get a lot of experience with sail handing, navigation and passage planning. Quality foul weather gear will be critical. The Gulf of Maine is definitely chilly this time of year!
